Chapter 15
Awards Podium
We gather together in front of a different set of bleachers for awards. This meet is so big there is a separate area for awards so that the next session can start while we finish up. As I look around at the parents getting settled in this new section, I am so happy. We did it. We all had a great meet and I think I scored out. Marissa said I needed to average an 8.5 on each event and I think I did just that. I know I got an 8.7 on vault and an 8.55 on beam. Even though I missed my bars and floor score, they were solid routines that must have scored higher than an 8.5.
Trista is already sitting on the floor waiting for awards, knees bouncing.
âI think we may have gotten better than third place,â she says.
âWhy third?â I ask.
âLast year we got third, but I think with your huge vault and my bars not being as pathetic, we may have gotten second place.â
I sit next to her, pleased that she feels my vault has helped the team improve from last year.
âWhat a great meet,â Marissa says, walking up. âWe had some small errors, but for the most part rocked it,â she says, sitting down. âDid you guys score out?â
âI donât know,â we both say at the same time and then look at each other and laugh.
âWell, do you think you did?â she presses.
I slowly nod, while Trista says, âI think I might have. I didnât see my beam score though.â
âAwesome, you guys, good job!â she says with a genuine happiness. The rest of our team walks up and sits down.
Savannah stays standing and starts handing out little gifts. They are wrapped in a clear baggie, tied with a blue bow, and have a note attached. When she hands one to me I take the gift, thank her, and look down. Itâs a sugar cookie shaped like a gymnast with icing the exact color and design of our leotards. The tag says Great Job at State!
âOh my gosh, this is too cute to eat!â Alexis exclaims.
âDid your mom make these?â Paige asks.
âNo, she ordered them weeks ago, she has been so excited,â Savannah says.
Trista turns and holds up her cookie and waves at Savannahâs mom and we all laugh.
Before any of us can open our cookie, it is announced that they are starting awards, so we set them down and quietly wait.
I look at my cookie and try to tell myself that whatever happens I am proud of how I competed today and I donât need a medal. But secretly, I really want a medal.
The announcer starts with Savannahâs age group and she gets a medal on beam, bars, and All-Around. Her mom goes nuts when she is announced as 4th All-Around.
Then it is my age group, which, for this meet, also includes Trista, Alexis, and Marissa.
She starts on vault and I am thrilled when I hear my name for fifth place. My team cheers as I walk up to the podium and stand on the fifth place spot.
